As a freelance reporter and photographer, Lucas’ focus lies on topics such as migration, minorities, conflict and development. His work appeared in Al Jazeera, Politico, African Arguments, AllAfrica, De Standaard, De Morgen, The Correspondent, Knack, De Groene Amsterdammer, MO*, IPS, Bruzz, etc.
In 2015, Lucas reported on gender inequality, illegal gold mining and the presidential elections in Suriname. Afterwards, he conducted research on frozen conflicts and reconciliation in Abkhazia, South-Ossetia and Georgia. In the same year, he analyzed the Burundian political crisis from a refugee and activist perspective by visiting the Mahama refugee camp in Rwanda. In 2016, he reported on the humanitarian crisis in the Lake Chad Basin and followed migratory routes through the Sahel, visiting Mali and Niger.
For his projects, Lucas received working grants from the European Commission, Journalismfund.eu, Free Press Unlimited and the Fonds voor Bijzondere Journalistieke Projecten.
